Syracuse, Siciliaanse stad vol kunstschatten vanuit Catania

Een dagexcursie naar de best bewaard gebleven Griekse archeologische schatten is een must voor iedere vakantieganger op Sicilië. Ook kunt u van een Moscato di Siracusa wijn proeven. In de namiddag heeft u genoeg tijd om zelf het historische centrum te bekijken met zijn vele bars, restaurants en winkels.

We vervolgen onze route naar het zuiden van het eiland. Interessant is dat hier de continentale platen van Afrika en Europa elkaar ontmoeten. U kunt er tussen de twee continenten staan. Syracuse, zoals deze stad in het Nederlands wordt genoemd, was oorspronkelijk een Griekse kolonie gesticht door de Korintiërs in 734 v. Chr. Het was de belangrijkste stad in Magna Graecia, en het concurreerde lange tijd met Athene om de hoofdstad van Griekenland te worden. In het Syracuse van vandaag kunt u het historisch belang van deze stad nog steeds terugvinden door de vele monumenten en archeologische schatten.

In het archeologische park Neapolis bezichtigen we het Griekse Theater (5e eeuw v. Chr.) waar tegenwoordig oude Griekse tragedies worden opgevoerd, het Romeinse amfitheater waar vroeger gladiatorengevechten plaatsvonden en de Latomia del Paradiso, oude steengroeven waar het bouwmateriaal voor veel van de Griekse monumenten vandaan komt zoals de beroemde Orecchio van Dionosio (Oor van Dionysius). Volgens de legende kon de tiran Dionysius het gefluister van de gevangenen horen die in de diepe gangen van de grot gevangen werden gehouden. In realiteit heeft de grot echter zo een goede akoustiek dat de geluiden in de grot 16 keer versterkt worden.

Sommige bezienswaardigheden in Syracuse bevinden zich op het eiland Ortigia. De belangrijkste monumenten zijn de kathedraal (een Ionische tempel gebouwd op een oude Siciliaanse nederzetting), een Byzantijnse basiliek, een Normandische kerk met Renaissance en barokke elementen, en de Arethusa zoetwaterbron. Na een aangename wandeling met uw gids is het tijd voor de lunch. Wanneer u trek heeft in een goede maaltijd, dan zal uw chauffeur u naar een typisch Siciliaans restaurant in het oude stadscentrum brengen waar heerlijke verse pasta, lokale visgerechten en goede Siciliaanse wijnen wordt geserveerd.

In de namiddag heeft u genoeg tijd om zelf het historische centrum op het eiland Ortigia te verkennen. U kunt in uw eigen tempo door de nauwe straatjes en langs de historische monumenten slenteren, in de kleine winkeltjes rondkijken of op een terras gaan zitten van een van de vele barretjes om van een heerlijke Siciliaanse gelato of lekkernij te genieten.

Syracuse, as it is known in English, was built on an ancient Greek settlement founded by Corinthians in 734 BC. It was the most important city in Magna Graecia, and for a time competed with Athens as the most important city of the Greek world. It expresses all the variety and cultural complexity of Sicily, from its origins to our times.

The visit at the Neapolis Archaeological Park includes the Greek Theatre (5th century BC), where nowadays the ancient Greek tragedies go in scene; the Roman Amphitheatre, where combats among gladiators were held; the Latomie of the Stone Paradise, ancient hollows which provided the stone for many of the Greek monuments, like the famous is the Orecchio of Dionisio (Ear of Dionysius). According to the legend, the then tyrant Dionysius could hear the whispers of the prisoners that were held in its depths. In reality, it has such an unbelievable acoustic power that the sound produced inside is amplified up to sixteen times.

Some of the ancient sights to see in Syracuse are located in the isle of Ortigia. The two most important are the Cathedral (a Doric Temple built on an ancient Sicilian settlement), a Byzantine basilica, a Norman church with late Renaissance and Baroque elements, and the Arethusa Fountain, a place linked to Greek mythology. After this pleasant walking tour with your guide, it is definitely time for lunch. If you want to enjoy an excellent meal, your driver will show you a typical Sicilian restaurant located in this ancient town that specializes in pasta and local fish dishes matched with the best of Sicilian wines.
